We Are Augustines are my discovery of the year. When I first heard Headlong Into The Abyss on some random sampler I was hooked and I knew this song would be the soundtrack to my spring.
We Are Augustines consist of former members of Pela who released a critically acclaimed album in 2007. Rise Ye Sunken Ships is We Are Augustine’s debut which was released in March this year and is a statement rather than just an album. The songs tell stories of mental illness in the family, growing up in foster homes and the suicide of a brother. It is this heartfelt honesty that makes their songs stand out from other rock bands out there.
Musically, the band moves along the lines of The Hold Steady, The Gaslight Anthem and Kings of Leon. Knowing this, I have the feeling this band is going to be big. This might very well be the first and last chance to see them in the intimate surroundings of Magnet Club (and I was right about The Gaslight Anthem whom I saw at the old Magnet a couple of years ago).
Some of you may have seen the band as the somewhat out of place opener for The Maccabees a couple of weeks ago. I’m delighted that the good people at Flux fm love the band as much as I do and left no stone unturned to bring the band to you tonight for a headline show.
