Love them or love-to-hate them, The Mars Volta are nothing if not a band that makes you think about what music actually is and the creative processes that sometimes come into play. Live and on first listen the material sounds like the product of improvisation, that’s the level of free-flow that it exhibits, but when you get into it a bit better you realise that there are actual hooks and melodies there, it’s just that they’re buried under so many layers of other stuff, that they’re almost relegated to the subconcious. That’s especially true in a live setting, a Mars Volta show is just an onslaught, a complete non-stop assault on the senses and with a relentless pace like what they set, it’s completely up to you to keep up or get left behind and wait for eight minutes until the next big idea starts.
