Indie folk fourtet The Magic Numbers take a break from celebrating the success of their latest album The Runaway to hit the road, touring Europe and playing Magnet Club here in Berlin.
Interestingly, The Magic Numbers took a four year break before coming out with The Runaway, meaning that they were on holiday during the whole hipster indie-folk groundswell that Mumford & Sons et al rode so skilfully, even though The Magic Numbers themselves were undoubtedly some level of pre-cursor to the whole phenomenon in the first place.
Not being ones to follow a trend, The Magic Numbers choose instead to start them, The Runaway being a whole new take on their established sound, incorporating a range of new influences, even dipping into the realms of electronica and dance. The album has been criticised for being a bit discordant, but that’s what’s going to make the show at Magnet fun, you’re not just going to be hearing the same Mamas & Papas tribute show you heard from them five years ago, instead you’ll be treated to a modern act with solid songs, a new product of many and varied influences.
