The Cranky Christmas Show comes to you like every Cranky Night so far this year with good bands and a great crowd having a good time so to round off the year I’ve lined-up two special acts for your dancing pleasure, New Trainers (techno-prog-fitness) and Caudal (krautrock/space jams).
New Trainers are Steve Heather (drums) and Thomas Meadowcroft (synth). Since 1994 Steven Heather has been performing and recording as a musician regularly in Australia, Europe, America and Asia. Currently living in Berlin, he plays in a wide variety of groups, from impro, electro-acoustic and jazz, to rock, noise and dub. His current music projects include, BOOKLET (Tobius Delius, Joe Williamson) TUB (Thomas Meadowcroft, Boris Hauf), HEAVEN AND (Martin Siewert, Zeitblom), MRS CONCEPTION (Axel Drner, Tobius Delius, Jan Roder). He composes and performs regularly in the fields of dance, theater, film new media and performance and has had residencies in Australia, Belgium, Holland and Germany.
He’s got an enormous dynamic range combined with a unique ability to set down a groove – not the sort of drummer that you often come across.
With the funniest promo-bio you’re likely to read this side of the apocalypse New Trainers danced into view last October at their debut show at Ausland taking everyone by surprise with the most danceable beats I’ve heard in Berlin outside a techno party. They’re a drums and synth duo on a mission:
some say the they’re inventing a whole new music genre for the twenty-first century, a genre for the cool, the poor, the literate, for all those not predisposed to exercise. They call it TECHNO-PROG-FITNESS. Others don’t care. They just wanna lose weight and look good. Whatever you think, all agree the NEW TRAINERS are the most exciting thing happening to fat and sound around.
Caudal is the latest project of Aidan Baker, probably the most prolific musician recording music in Berlin today. When he’s not releasing another amazing spacerock/drone album with his partner Leah Buckareff in their band Nadja, he’s off touring his own solo records which are as numerous as the words in this preview so who knows where he found the time to form this outfit. They make their debut appearance tonight and I’m honoured to have them:
Caudal is the new project of Aidan Baker (guitar), Gareth Sweeney (bass), and Felipe Salazar (drums). Their sound can best be described as a mixture of Krautrock, Spacerock, Drone, and even Post-Punk, creating pulsating, psychedelic soundscapes that hypnotize you right from the beginning.
Here’s a first one of theirs called, Hit By A Nut (Rough Mix):
