Over the past few months New Desert Blues have become one of my favourite bands. The played Reeperbahn Festival last year and support shows for Editors. This year saw the release of their debut EP Devil’s Rope, support shows for Augustines as well as their own headline tour across Germany. Unfortunately, they couldn’t make it to Berlin during their last tour but now they are back for an open air show at Berlin’s Badeschiff.
The band has a unique sound that they describe as noir-americana, a blend of up to five guitars at a time, polyphonic vocals and stories from the American West. All of that particularly comes to the fore during their live shows. Names such as Zachary or Adam have been given to songs as if characters of a story, the band have created a world within which these stories intertwine and their records serve as concise pieces of musical storytelling.
When we asked them earlier this year whether the album would continue that pattern they ensure us that they would pursue the general theme but also take the sound to a new level and that they were running out of boys names to give to their songs. Here’s a new song that was recently played at T in the Park.
