Lambchop made one of my favourite albums of all time, Nixon, back in 2000 and since then I’ve been waiting for them reproduce something even close to it’s brilliance. Sadly I’ve been disappointed with each ensuing Lamchop record and recent offering Mr. M is no different.
This is not to say that recent albums have been poor, it’s just that it really seems to be the case that Lambchop did make their best work already. From their debut in 1994, with I Hope You’re Sitting Down, through to 1998, they released four albums. Their rough around the edges warmth and charm culminated in the pinnacle of their unique country-soul sound in 2000 with their fifth and finest, Nixon, even today it still sounds so much better than any of their recent albums. It’s impossible to listen to The Old Gold Shoe or You Masculine You even today without literally dropping what I’m doing and forgetting that I’ve been running the bath for the past thirty minutes. Those rich strings, the country twang of the guitars, horns poking out of every corner possible, the irrestistible soul groove underlying it all. It really has been a bone of contention for me that Is A Woman (2002) has people gushing at the drop of a hat and had the band themselves playing it in it’s entirety here at Admiralspalast last year. Now that was a snoozeathon that City Slang really should have avoided.
However, it should still be a good show at the Babylon Kino in Mitte. I mean, don’t let me put you off. I’ll just be here at home waiting for that Lambchop play Nixon from start to finish show before I’ll go see them again.
Lambchop return with this video for Gone Tomorrow including all of your favourite WWF Slamdown moves…or something like that. I suppose I should say awesome now:
