Beach House land in their newly built spaceship for a glorious show at planet Volksbhne with that great sound and a completely sold out crowd.
Hang on? Did he just say spaceship? Yes, that’s right folks, spaceship. If you’re to make albums of consistent quality, as Beach house have been doing for a while now, then you need a spaceship to whizz around the galaxy collecting all the ethereal soundscapes needed to match your songs and stardust to sprinkle on them for that extra-special Beach Houseness. Not to mention getting high enough into the stratosphere in order to hear what your guitar is sounding like such are the sky-scraping heights reached by Alex Scally and Victoria Legrand on latest record Bloom.
First song leaked to the public, Myth, annoyed the crap out of me because it sounded like a Cocteau Twins rip-off and there’s nothing I hate more than someone ripping off one of my favourite bands of all time…and then I stopped myself and thought of all the shit bands they could be ripping off and, slapping myself across the cheek, I pulled out Teen Dream and blissed out to how good Beach House truly are…(and then I listened to some of my favourite Cocteau Twins albums behind Teen Dream’s back).
Those of you who dearly wished for a progression from last record Teen Dream’s overwhelmingly sad and magical sound might be disappointed but things can’t be that bad if you have another very very good Beach House album to listen to for the rest of the summer, which will no doubt grow on you, and have you cycling around town humming the tunes you can’t get out of your head with a big stupid grin on your face as you accidentally run another red light. Or was that just the last two days for me? You know what I mean, you’d have to be a real killjoy to not like this record.
Here’s a homemade video to match Ten Mile Stereo off Teen Dream and below that the B-side to the Lazuli 7″ released on Record Store Day which is just bloody gorgeous, it’s called Equal Mind:
