The music of Julianna Barwick may be difficult to chew for some – although it is heavily vocal based, there is rarely any definable lyrics or the normal verse-chorus-verse structure our ears have become accustomed to. Creating most of her pieces with the support of her own voice, recorded and looped on itself in choral and rhythmic patterns, Barwick also utilizes piano and the occasional reverb-heavy guitar to flesh out her ethereal and unique music.
Having just released her first LP The Magic Place, her debut has been lauded as an achievement similar to that of Bjork’s vocal-laden record Medulla.
Pitchfork.com describes it as:
The kind of record that sounds gorgeous and immersive on first listen and never loses its sparkle, whether playing in the background or filling a room with its swells.
Enhanced by occasional artistic visuals, lighting and various props, this is one show sure to be more of a sensory experience than your regular gig. Forego your usual indie rock night and head to HBC with an open mind for something a little different.
