Kat Frankie is clearly one of my most interesting random music discoveries. Ever since I first downloaded a free track (The Tops) off her first album Kat Frankie has risen from being an insider’s tip to become something of a local troubadour and lesbian icon for that matter (although she does not officially comment on the subject).
I find it really hard to describe her music because it cannot simply be pinpointed to singer-songwriter. She is often compared to P J Harvey but personally I feel like her voice is closer to that of Sarah McLachlan. I guess you just have to hear for yourselves.
Her live shows are really amazing. Her record release show for her second album at the Festsaal Kreuzberg last year was sold out. While she usually has a full band to back her up (sometimes including strings) tonight will be a solo show, that means Kat and a guitar. Well, not just a guitar, she usually brings a recording machine to loop her own voice. This song is not to be found on record because it just has to be played live (that’s what she told me when I asked her about recording it). Fortunately, she did this one for TV Noir a couple of months ago:
So while you’re at the show don’t forget to buy her albums. She released them through her own record label Zellephane.
