This is drinking music of the highest standard. Come sober, leave plastered. Come pissed, leave redeemed. These guys are everything to all men…….and women, sorry.
Just check out the names of these guys: Governor Shinbone McDagger, JJ Kadaver, Dead Horse Jones, Creepy J McGraw. If that’s not enough they’ve managed to create a genre called Horror Country, yes, Horror and Country Music mixed together (or is that just some lamo hacks? Ed). Songs about death, doom and werewolves abound but don’t worry cos I’ve seen them before and they don’t pull out a chainsaw at the end and chop the front row’s heads off……not recently anyway.
It’s a mix of country, bluegrass, folk and murder ballads with six male baritone voices scooping it up and carrying it along on a wave of spirits both imaginary and alcoholic, every now and then building into a knees-up such as on “Scarecrow” helped onwards by their unusual washboard and hammer and chain percussion. Yes, hammer and chain percussion kids, I’m not wasted this morning, I meant to write that.
Graveyard Train are always a sell-out in their hometown of Melbourne, Australiermia, inspiring sing-alongs from the swaying crowds. If things go your way this could cap your summer perfectly cos it’s gonna be a raucous affair.
Tip: it’s free before 9pm. Show starts at 10pm. sshhh.
Their new album “The Drink, The Devil and The Dance” is out now on Spooky Records.
