Snailhouse return to Berlin to regale us once more with their fantastic recent album Sentimental Gentleman, released last May.
Last May as part of the Canadian Blast series of shows, Snailhouse turned in a flawless performance at NBI worthy of much hyperbole and praise. Mike Feurstack’s voice is one which should be as well known as someone like, say, Bonnie Prince Billy for example, his backing band (who also make up Olympic Symphonium) are the most accomplished players one could wish for. Sentimental Gentleman is riddled with memorable lyrics such as those on the title track: “we lied to the promoter, said we’re packing them in, we’re sentimental gentlemen, we’re playing to win”. And we all smile together.
To choose a bit of press that comes close to what I’m trying to say, Exclaim writer Chris Whibbs says of Snailhouse:
The lyrics on their own are lovely but they attain sublime status due to how the music envelops and caresses them, framing them perfectly. … add in the weeping strings, the plaintive guitar and Feuerstack’s pining voice and you’ve got perfection. Forget lies, the hidden truth makes this music the real winner.
Remember it’s an early start at Schokoladen folks, Water Brother will be on by 7.30pm.
Here’s a few live videos, the second one contains two songs, Clean Water the first:
