Earth make it to Berlin for a headlining show at the one and only Festsaal Kreuzberg in the excellent company of Oe Paon and Mount Eerie.
Possibly the loudest, depending on who you’re talking to of course, guitar band in the world, Earth have been around for years quietly making great music and I think I sense a sold out show here, especially given the appearance of Mount Eerie into the bargain.

This primarily instrumental ensemble has actually been performing since 1989. The sound has changed over the years, but will always have major pieces of the alternative grunge or drone doom sound that Earth appears to be credited with founding. Most things I have read describe drone doom as minimalistic doom metal, but I tend not to agree completely. There is the doom rhythm, but whenever you pull a cello into your session I think you have crossed the line of minimalist.
The new album follows the basic theme of the highly acclaimed 2008 record: “The Bees Made Honey In The Lion’s Skull.” The dreary sound is aided by the above mentioned cellist, Lori Goldstein and is inspired by British Folk Rock. Even with the interesting structures the song patterns can at times sound exactly alike, but listening closely and investing sometime in this album will show you the subtle nuances that make it a true piece of art.
