Cranky Booking presents the next in its monthly Cranky Night at Antje Oklesund and this month we have something very special indeed with Baby In Vain from Copenhagen and Berlin’s very own Mother Of The Unicorn.
Baby In Vain are gaining quite a reputation as one of the most exciting and intense live bands in Copenhagen at the moment, the sheer intensity of their live show belying the fact that these ladies Andrea (guitar/vocals), Benedicte (drums/sax) and Lola (guitar/vocals) are all still only 20 years of age and under. Their debut EP Sweetheart Dreams sounds innocent enough but titles can be deceiving and nothing really prepares you for these three songs of simply brilliant double-guitar, vocals and drums excellence. Having played as support to the one and only Ty Segall recently in Copenhagen, it’s now time for these young stoner-rockers to take Berlin; get ready, it’s going to be a loud and very, very heavy evening of guitar action.
When three young girls get together, turn their amplifiers up to 11, and play heavy, dragging rock you know that something special is about to happen. With a cinematic lyrical universe and a fondness of being experimental, Baby In Vain captures their listener in a mood that brings the 90’s stoner-rockscene to mind as if it was set in an innovative setting anno 2012. On the recently released EP “Sweetheart Dreams”, Baby In Vain demonstrated their ability to combine different elements such as dirty guitars, angry vocals and a clever sense for melody and detail. Baby In Vain is a fresh breath from the underground of the danish rock-scene. Baby In Vain must be experienced live.
Supporting is Mother Of The Unicorn who made their debut at the Kugelbahn Cranky Night series in August. Joe Kelly, the creative force behind this band, and his brother Aaron, recently re-located to Berlin from Brighton and have recorded two of their four EPs since arriving. Having recruited William Kudahl Sorensen on bass, Kelly’s artistic vision is beginning to become realised in a live setting. A healthy dose of The National and Radiohead can be heard throughout MOTU’s excellent arrangements, one to watch. Take a listen and hear why:
